Something amiss with China Cosmos Pageant 2005
Paris Lido August 8th 2005:
Seventeen girls representing 8 European countries gathered with their families and friends at the world renowned Lido Paris venue for the right to progress to the Miss China Cosmos 2005 Hong Kong final.
Phoenix China News and Entertainment channel eagerly covered the girl’s pre-show activities during 5 days of rehearsals and photo opportunities in the French Capital. However behind the pretence of a competition promoting the most beautiful and intelligent, unbeknown to 14 of the contestants, forces were already at work to ensure the correct 3 entrants moved to the final.
What was surprising was the blatant promotion of the favourites before and during the semi-final.
Re-numbering of the semi-final running order, along with positioning of contestants during photo-shoots and shopping trips, simply casting the most able to the sidelines to hide the obvious notion that the best contestants might just deserve a trip to Hong Kong.
The host French contestant now 28 years old and passed over twice before in previous competitions was a certainty for a final position, along with the Hungary contestant with major Budapest corporate sponsorship. In fact so confident were the Hungarian delegation that they did not bother to turn up to the competition hotel until 24 hours after everybody else has put in a full days work. That would leave one final position, and some were astounded that it went to the Spanish contestant, whom it would be fair to describe as not the "sharpest tool in the box" with looks to match the intelligence. Faith could be restored then, no home votes, no corporate sponsor yet the young lady from Spain would be on the plane heading east come October. That is until it was revealed that her father is a business partner of the hotel owner who put up the girls during the semi-final competition.
PCNE has blackened its reputation in this tawdry episode and should apologise to all the European 2005 semi-final contestants unreservedly. Until then, the 2005 finalist’s best ensure that they have packed their cheque books along with the swim suits.
